After a rematch with King Dedede, Kirby places the restored Star Rod into the fountain against Dedede's protests and the sky turn pitch black. Thinking King Dedede is once again up to no good, Kirby defeats his minions and recovers the pieces of the Star Rod. King Dedede casually explains that he has broken up the fabled Star Rod that powered the Fountain of Dreams, causing the people of Dream Land to be unable to dream, and given the pieces to his most trusted minions for safekeeping. In Kirby's Adventure, Kirby travels to the Fountain of Dreams after finding out that the people of Dream Land have become unable to dream and sees King Dedede bathing in the fountain's sacred waters. Kirby's Adventure, and Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland His actions are reversed by Kirby upon his defeat, with a finishing blow sending him flying through the ceiling of his castle.
At the end of the game Kirby fights King Dedede in a boxing ring. Additionally, five of the the Dream Lander's magical, treasured Sparkling Stars needed to obtain more food were confiscated by King Dedede and given to his four strongest minions, keeping one for himself. Dedede and steal the majority of Dream Land's food for a gluttonous feast. One night, under the cover of darkness, he and several thieves acting on his part swoop down from his castle on Mt. King Dedede is the main antagonist of Kirby's Dream Land.
As such, he is the most recurring major character of the series besides Kirby, Meta Knight and Waddle Dee. He has appeared in almost every game in the series (with the exception of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror). King Dedede's selfish and self-centered behavior frequently causes him and Kirby to butt heads, however he will often fight to defend the people of Dream Land and even team up with Kirby, whenever an outside force threatens "his" kingdom. Nonetheless he seems to have a sizeable army of easily swayed followers and owns castles and fortresses all over the country. He is a large blue penguin, that claims to be the king of Dream Land, however he performs no administrative function for the people, and for the most part is ignored by most of Dream Land's populace.
